CARRYING THE FLUTE

My bag is full of flutes: some from Bolivia, Java, Hawaii, Africa, Japan
Europe, Australia, and from Turtle Island. Which is your favorite?
Which has the sweetest voice?
Some are long and dark, some wide, some mottled.
Still others have been broken, working differently than originally intended.
There are light colored, short, bristly voiced and smotthe, high pitched ones.
Which is the most important...
Each brings an enriching quality that add Fullness to my flute bag.

Hawk's workshop is in the forests near the coast of Maine

The North Atlantic Ocean

Hawk uses only hand tools and fire to make his handmade fluted

Each flute takes about 40 hours to craft

                Gathering &
                 Choosing Wood

He gathers from the forests where he lives, leaving gifts of thanks to the trees that have sacrificed in order to become a part of the creation of a flute.

Wood may also come as gifts from people who may also work with wood as carpenters, woodworkers, and others.

Hawk will also seek out particular woods for custom-order flutes.

Always, he looks at the wood for its functional potential, listens to its resonance when tapped, and listens intuitively to find out if the wood itself seems drawn to becoming a flute.
